Is Amazon FBA worth it in Mexico? FBA vs. FBM and the third path with a 3PL
Is Amazon FBA worth it in Mexico? Yes —for small, light, fast-moving products where the Prime badge pays for itself in conversion. But the decision isn’t binary: between “everything into FBA” and “I pack from my own warehouse” there’s a third path most guides barely develop: selling via FBM with a 3PL behind you. Fast, competitive shipping without paying Amazon storage on bulky or slow-moving products, and a single inventory for all your channels.
What is FBA and what is FBM?
With FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) you send your merchandise to Amazon’s centers and they store, pack, ship and handle returns; your products qualify for Prime. With FBM (Fulfillment by Merchant) you list on Amazon but the order is shipped by you… or by whoever you choose. That’s the key most sellers miss: FBM doesn’t mean packing in your garage, it means you choose who operates.
When is FBA actually worth it?
FBA performs when the product plays in favor of its fee structure:
- Small and light product: the per-unit fulfillment fee stays reasonable.
- High rotation: inventory moves out fast and barely accumulates storage.
- A margin that absorbs commissions and fees without going into the red.
- Your sales are concentrated on Amazon and the Prime badge truly moves your conversion.
FBA’s fee structure (and where it hurts)
Rates change every year, so rather than figures, understand the logic:
- Per-unit fulfillment fee: calculated by size and weight; it grows fast on bulky or heavy products.
- Monthly storage: you pay for the space you occupy, and the rate goes up in peak season.
- Aged-inventory charges: whatever doesn’t turn over within Amazon’s window pays growing surcharges. It’s a direct penalty on slow rotation.
- Returns and removals: processing returns or pulling your inventory out of FBA also costs money.
- Prep and labeling: merchandise must check in exactly as Amazon requires, or you pay them to prep it.
The third path: FBM backed by a 3PL
This is the setup almost no guide develops: you list via FBM, but picking and shipping is handled by a logistics operator with processing times guaranteed in writing. You win three things: competitive delivery without depending on Amazon’s warehouse, zero Amazon storage on bulky and slow-moving products, and control over your inventory, your packaging and your reverse logistics. Amazon stops being your warehouse and stays what it really is: a sales channel.
FBA or FBM with a 3PL? Decide by rotation and margin
A quick mental table, SKU by SKU:
- High rotation + small and light + healthy margin → FBA: the Prime badge pays for itself.
- Bulky or heavy → FBM with a 3PL: FBA’s size-based fee and storage eat the margin.
- Medium or low rotation → FBM with a 3PL: you avoid aged-inventory charges.
- Seasonal → hybrid: move it into FBA just for the season and run it from the 3PL the rest of the year.
- Fragile, special-handling or branded packaging → FBM with a 3PL: FBA packs it their way, not yours.
Multichannel: Amazon + Mercado Libre + your own store from one inventory
The inventory you put into FBA ships Amazon orders; using it for other channels goes through their multichannel fulfillment program, with its own costs and conditions. If you also sell on Mercado Libre or your own store, the simplest route is usually a single inventory at a 3PL that ships every channel and, when it makes sense, also preps and replenishes FBA or Full. The next step: run your numbers, not someone else’s
