Warehousing and distribution in Guadalajara: what the service includes and how it is charged

"Warehousing and distribution" is the name most companies use when they want to get goods out of their own warehouse and have someone else store and move them. The problem is that every operator puts different things in that package: some only rent space and call it distribution when they phone a carrier, and some run the whole chain.

What warehousing and distribution is (and is not)

It is receiving your goods, storing them with inventory control and dispatching them wherever they are needed: stores, distributors, marketplaces or end customers, with proof of every delivery. It is not just space with a forklift: if at the end you are still deciding what leaves, when, and building the order yourself, what you contracted is a warehouse, not a service.

What a complete service includes

Stage What happens What you should receive
Receiving Every SKU is counted, checked and entered into the system Receiving report with discrepancies, if any
Storage Pallet storage with location and traceability Inventory you can look up, not a weekly email
Picking Picking per order or per shipment, packing and labeling Confirmation of every order fulfilled
Distribution Parcel, consolidated freight or store delivery Tracking numbers and proof of delivery
Reverse logistics Returns, exchanges and re-entry into inventory Record of what came back and in what condition

B2B and B2C are not the same distribution

Sending 40 pallets to a retail distribution center and sending 400 parcels to 400 people are different operations: the first demands appointments, labeling and the chain’s documentation; the second demands speed, carriers and returns handling. Ask which of the two the provider runs today, with examples. Many do one well and promise the other.

How it is charged

The usual structure is a rate per occupied pallet for storage, a rate per order or per unit for picking, and shipping by destination and carrier. What varies a lot between operators is the extras: some charge every inventory movement, receiving, repackaging or labeling separately; others include them. Ask for a quote on a real month of yours and compare the total, not the base rate.

Questions worth asking before contracting

  • How do I see my inventory and how often is it updated?
  • What does the storage rate include and what is charged separately?
  • Is there a minimum contract or lock-in?
  • Which products do you not accept?
  • Which carriers do you work with and which zones do they reach from your warehouse?
  • Which certification is current and for which processes?
  • Can I visit the warehouse?

Guadalajara as a distribution point

The Guadalajara metro area sits at the crossroads of routes to central Mexico, the Bajío, the Pacific (with the port of Manzanillo) and the north, and it has a cargo airport. For a brand selling in western Mexico and the Bajío, or importing through Manzanillo, distributing from here shortens the legs. For one selling mostly in the northeast, it is worth comparing real carrier times before deciding.
